Assistant Instructor (A.I.)

The PADI Assistant Instructor course is the first portion of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). You'll not only gain additional experience as a PADI Professional but you'll also start learning the PADI System of diver education.

What can PADI Assistant Instructors do?

• Teach academic presentations under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor.
• Evaluate Open Water Diver surface skills under the indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor.
• Teach the PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty course.
• Teach Project AWARE Specialty courses.
• Conduct PADI Discover Scuba experiences.
• Teach E.F.R. after successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor Course.

• PADI Divemaster rating or qualifying certification from another certification organization.
• At least 18 years old.
• Have 60 logged dives, including night, deep, and navigation dives.
• Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months.

• Knowledge development through self-study, quizzes, lectures and presentations.
• Confined water skill review and assessment, workshops and presentations.
• Open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations.

• The course can vary from as little as three days to more than two weeks.

Open Water Scuba Instructor (O.W.S.I.)

The Open Water Scuba Instructor program is your final step in the quest to become a PADI Instructor. During the IDC, you'll learn to use and adapt the PADI System of diver education to individual student needs. Comprehensive training, supported by a wide variety of PADI educational materials, earns PADI Instructors respect from both students and peers.

What can Open Water Scuba Instructors do?

• Open Water Scuba Instructors may conduct a broad range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba to Divemaster.

• PADI Assistant Instructor certification or be an instructor in good standing with another training organization for at least six months.
• Hold a dive certification for at least six months.
• Have 60 logged dives that include night, deep and navigation dives.
• Proof of CPR training within the last 24 months.
• Medical clearance signed by a physician.

• Knowledge development through self-study, quizzes, lectures and presentations.
• Confined water skill review and assessment, workshops and presentations.
• Open water workshops, rescue assessment and candidate presentations.

• Times can vary from four days to three weeks or more.

IDC Staff Instructor

PADI IDC Staff Instructors are PADI Instructors moving towards instructor-level training or teaching the Instructor Development Course (IDC). IDC Staff Instructors can independently train and certify PADI Assistant Instructors as well as help train PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors.

What I can do as IDC Staff Instuctor

• Teach PADI Assistant Instructor courses.
• Help PADI Course Directors conduct the PADI Instructor Development Course.
• Help PADI Course Directors conduct instructor -level continuing education.

• PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer certification.
• Must be 18 years old.

• Master of instructor-level dive theory, knowledge development teaching presentations and confined water teaching presentations.
• Audit a complete IDC.

• Two course days plus a complete IDC audit.

Instructor Exams (I.E.)

After successful completion of the IDC or IOC, you must successfully complete the PADI Instructor Examination (IE). You will be evaluated on; dive theory, academic teaching, confined-water (pool) teaching, open-water teaching and general diving skills and professionalism.

Four Components:

• One – Theory (physics, physiology, skills & environment, RDP and equipment – 12 questions on each 1 ½ hours 75% pass mark, one make up and GS & P – 50 questions 1 ½ hours 75%, no make up).
• Two – Confined water (presentation 3.4 and 5 skills 3.4).
• Three – Teaching presentation (prescriptive – 3.5).
• Four – Open Water (two skills average 3.5) and rescue evaluation.

Emergency First Response Instructor (With Care For Children)

Emergency First Response Corp., a PADI corporate affiliate, offers the Emergency First Response CPR and first aid program.

What can PADI EFR Instructors do?

• As an Emergency First Response Instructor, you can conduct Emergency First Response Primary (CPR) and Secondary Care (first aid) courses.

• At least PADI Divemaster certification.
• Emergency First Response certification or qualifying certification from another certification organization.

• You'll learn how to conduct the Emergency First Response Primary Care (CPR) and Emergency First Response Secondary Care (first aid) courses.
• You'll also learn to conduct the recommended Automated External Defibrillator (AED), emergency oxygen and conscious choking management skills.

• The Emergency First Response Instructor Course takes approximately eight hours.

• Must have made at least 10 dives in the particular specialty area.
